José Ignacio Santos M.D. MSc - Member

José Ignacio Santos M.D. MScDr. Jose I. Santos is currently Director General of Hospital Infantil de Mexico Federico Gómez, Mexico´s oldest National Institute of Health and most prestigious pediatric teaching hospital. He is also Professor of Experimental Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the School of Medicine of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico. He obtained his bachelors and masters of science degrees in biology and microbiology, respectively, from the California Polytechnic University at Pomona and his medical degree and pediatric residency from Stanford University School of Medicine. At the University of Utah College of Medicine, Dr. Santos specialized in clinical immunology and infectious diseases.

Previous to his current position from 1997-2004 he served Mexico´s Ministry of Health as Director of the Child and Adolescent Health Program, Migrant Health Program Coordinator, and Technical Secretary of the National Immunization Council. From 1985-1997, he was head of the Research Division and Infectious Diseases Department of the Hospital Infantil de Mexico Federico Gómez; from 1980-1985, he served as Associate professor of Pediatrics and Pathology at Boston University School of Medicine. From 1985 to 1996, he was a lecturer at Harvard School of Medicine and attending in pediatric infectious diseases at the Children’s Service of Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr. Santos has over 20 years of experience as a researcher and leader in the areas of infectious diseases, nutrition and immune function as well as the evaluation and introduction of new vaccines in the developing world. Dr. Santos is the author of over 220 scientific publications, 60 book chapters mostly in the area of infectious diseases and 5 books and has trained over 60 Infectious Diseases Fellows from Mexico and 13 Latin American countries.

Dr. Santos joined the board of the Pan American Health and Education Foundation in 2007.
