Dr. Fernando Mönckeberg Barros received the 1979 Abraham Horwitz Award for Inter-American Health for his leadership in the field of nutrition. He graduated from the University of Chile in 1952 with a medical degree. He has most recently served as the Rector of the University of Santo Tomás in Santiago, Chile. Additional leadership positions include the Director of the Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology at the University of Chile and President of the Chilean Nutrition Foundation, (CONIN).

He has also been an Associate Professor at Harvard University in 1959, Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Chile in 1965, and a Professor of Nutrition at the University of Chile in 1967.In addition to the Horwitz Award, other honors include the 1975 Prize of the Chilean Society of Pediatrics and the 1985 Christopherson Prize from the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is a Member of the New York Academy of Sciences and the Chilean Academy of Medicine.

Dr. Fernando Monckeberg from Chile is accepting the certificate of achievement from PAHEF President, Prof. Abel Wohlman and the President of the PAHO Directing Council.
