A revolution is taking place in the knowledge base of life sciences and biotechnology, opening up new applications in health care, among other disciplines, as well as new scientific discoveries. The latest advances of science and knowledge in the health realm have been fundamental in the discovery of new biotechnological medicines, but also in the development of techniques for early diagnosis, treatment and cure of diseases. Undoubtedly, in today’s world biotechnology has become a vital resource to save and improve the quality of life for thousands of people around the world.
Unlike commonly known and used chemical-based medicines, innovative biotechnological medications are those products based on living systems that have been modified by means of biotechnology. They have an extensive, complex and inherently heterogeneous molecular structure, as well as an intricate production and storage process. The effects of these medicines extend beyond the factories and research centers influencing our everyday lives. Biotechnology has, for example, made it possible to detect, and in some cases treat, diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and cystic fibrosis.
These invaluable medicines are currently being introduced in many countries in Latin America. Like the introduction of any other new technology, biotechnology has also raised important policy and societal issues in the region. These issues must be addressed with great care and sensitivity.
Our Latin American societies should offer the necessary safeguards and channels of dialogue to ensure that the development and application of life sciences and biotechnology take place respecting the fundamental values and rights recognized by the international community. Education of and dialogue among different stakeholders should be the tenants to achieve such goals.
The Safe Biotech Initiative is an educational campaign by the Pan American Health and Education Foundations (PAHEF) aimed at educating physicians and patients about the present and future impact of biotechnology on human health and its importance for Latin American societies. This program will be firstly implemented in Mexico with the strategic leadership of a local advisory board of well-known and reputable experts in the biotechnology and medical fields in Mexico.
These experts will guide the strategy and execution of the educational initiative, which will encompass the implementation of informative meetings, generating networking opportunities and the development of resources and tools aim at improving understanding of biotechnology and its impact to improve the lives of people in the region.
The components and resources that will be available in Mexico will include:
1) the coordination of scientific sessions about biotechnology impact in different therapeutic areas, including: pharmacology, neurology, endocrinology, hematology, oncology and rheumatology;
2) the execution of Biotech 101 workshops for patients; and
3) the development of online and offline educational resources and tools on Mexican biotechnology.
