Malaria Day in the Americas is November 6th
Approximately 57% of people living within the Americas are at risk
of malaria infection. To draw attention to the issue, Malaria Day in
the Americas will be observed for the third consecutive year on
November 6, 2009. It will be the platform upon which countries of the
Region can engage in a year-round aggressive campaign against the
disease.
As part of this year's event, PAHEF, PAHO, and The
George Washington University are joining forces to host the Malaria in
the Americas Forum 2009: "Counting Malaria Out" towards the 2010
Targets and the UN Millennium Development Goals. Additionally, Malaria
Champions of the Americas will be recognized during the event. These
“champions” are people, institutions, groups, or projects working to
reduce the burden of malaria in the Western Hemisphere.
The top
three champions will be honored at a ceremony in Washington, DC, on
Malaria Day in the Americas. One of them will be conferred the top
distinction and receive: a cash award of $2,500; opportunities for
training and capacity building; and technical support from a research
fellow.
We welcome you to join us for Malaria Day in the
Americas, Friday, November 6th from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the PAHO
Headquarters at 525 23rd St., NW, Washington, DC.
By attending, you will be able to take part in an engaging
discussion which will highlight the progress of efforts towards
achieving global goals and national targets on malaria prevention and
control, the challenges of malaria elimination, and resolving various
issues on malaria work with mobile populations.
Although the event is open to the public, to expedite on-site
registration, we strongly suggest that you RSVP with your name,
designation and organization by filling out filling out this form.
