PAHO/WHO Official Named to the Board of the Pan American Health and Education Foundation
Dr. Richard Van West-Charles has been appointed by Dr. Mirta Roses, Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Regional Office for the Americas of the World Health Organization (WHO), to serve on the board of trustees of the Pan American Health and Education Foundation. This medical doctor has been involved in public health for more than 25 years first in his native Guyana, then expanding into the Caribbean and most recently Latin America. In the 1980s, he served his country as a member of parliament and headed his country’s delegation to the annual PAHO meeting of member countries. His interests range from global health, to community development, and issues of equity.
Today he is the PAHO Area Manager for Information and Knowledge Management. Dr. Van West-Charles says, “The inequities in the Americas can not only be addressed by economic interventions but by a commitment to empower people through sharing information and knowledge to enable them to act knowledgably.” Like many people, he admires Albert Einstein, and shares this Einstein quote, “All that is valuable in human society depends upon the opportunity for development accorded the individual.”
